A guided wizard for one of the sharpest tools in Eliyahu Goldratt's Theory of Constraints: tracing the symptoms you feel every day down to the root cause that's actually producing them.
Goldratt's claim was that organizations rarely have many independent problems. They have a handful of deep causes — sometimes just one — and everything else is a downstream Undesirable Effect. The Current Reality Tree is how you find it: you write down the effects, connect them with strict if … then … because logic, and follow the arrows down until you reach the bottom. Solve what's there and the whole tree above it tends to collapse.

A Current Reality Tree is a diagnostic tool from Eliyahu Goldratt's Theory of Constraints. The premise: the dozens of problems you feel day to day aren't independent. They're symptoms — Undesirable Effects — branching up from a small number of deeper causes, often a single core problem.
This wizard walks you down that tree. You'll name the symptoms, connect the ones where one causes another withif … then …because logic, and follow the arrows to the root.
How to read the tree
- You connect the effects you already listed. The core move isn't inventing new boxes — it's spotting where one Undesirable Effect causes another and drawing the arrow between them. A single UDE is usually both a cause and an effect.
- Arrows point up, toward the effect. A box below causes the box it points to above it: if the lower one is true, then the upper one follows, because of the logic you note on the link.
- Add deeper causes only to bridge a gap. When connecting two effects needs a missing step, or when your chain hasn't reached the bottom yet, add a new cause beneath — keep asking “why does this happen?” until a cause has none of its own.
- The core problem is at the bottom. Among the entry points, it's the one that reaches the most symptoms. Goldratt's rule of thumb: a single root cause typically explains around 70% of the UDEs.
